My name is Preethi Kumar and I am a Bay Area high school student. I grew up in a household where education was valued very highly. With both my grandparents being teachers and principals at schools in Sri Lanka, I was taught the importance of education at a very young age. As I grew older, I became more aware of the importance of education as well as the amount of children in poverty who lack access to a proper education. I began to do more research and wrote an 11 page research paper on the right to education for children in poverty. During my visit to Sri Lanka, I saw how the children were living and how most of them didn't have the means to go to school. I made it my goal to find a way to help these children receive the education they deserve. That is when Education Angels was born. I began teaching voice and piano lessons at a local music school and sent the money I earned to children in poverty living in Sri Lanka. From there, I formed an Education Angels club and organized several activities through school and my community to fundraise for this cause.
